The Juicy Lip Edit: Glosses, Oils and Balms Made for Summer

Apparently, I’ve decided my lips should look like they’ve been glazed.

I’m fine with this.

After months of deeper colours and heavier makeup, summer always makes me want to put the serious lipsticks away and reach for something lighter, shinier and considerably more fun.

Welcome to The Juicy Lip Edit — my ode to lip oils, glosses, balms and all things deliciously shiny.

And if my hair gets stuck to my lip gloss at least once this summer?

That’s simply the price of beauty.

First Things First: What Makes a Lip Juicy?

We’re not just talking about shine.

The perfect juicy summer lip should look fresh, plump and effortless.

Think:

  • sheer cherry reds
  • peachy corals
  • watermelon pinks
  • soft rose
  • barely-there nude
  • clear glass-like shine

I particularly love products that allow your natural lip colour to come through.

There’s something about a sheer wash of colour that immediately says summer without looking like you’ve spent half the morning doing your makeup.

Lip Oils Are Staying in My Handbag

I completely understand why lip oils became such a beauty obsession.

They sit somewhere between skincare and makeup: more polished than an ordinary balm, but often much easier to wear than a traditional gloss.

They’re particularly lovely on minimal-makeup days.

A little concealer.

Cream blush.

Mascara.

Lip oil.

Done.

They’re also dangerous territory for me because apparently I can justify owning several nearly identical pink lip oils on the basis that they are slightly different pinks.

Beauty logic.

The Lip Gloss Revival

Lip gloss and I have history.

There was a time when gloss meant applying something approximately the consistency of wallpaper paste and then spending the afternoon removing your own hair from your mouth.

Thankfully, things have improved.

Modern gloss formulas can be beautifully smooth, comfortable and genuinely wearable.

For summer, I’m particularly drawn to high-shine sheer colours rather than completely opaque formulas.

Cherry over bare lips?

Gorgeous.

Peach over a nude liner?

Yes please.

Clear gloss over your favourite lipstick?

Instant transformation.

Don’t Underestimate a Good Tinted Balm

Not every day calls for full gloss.

Some days I just want something I can apply without a mirror while I’m halfway out the door.

That’s where tinted balms earn their place.

They give you moisture, a little colour and that healthy my lips but considerably better finish.

They’re also brilliant for keeping in handbags.

Although if you’re anything like me, you’ll eventually discover that you own six handbags containing six different lip balms.

At least I’m prepared.

Cherry Is Having a Moment 🍒

There’s something wonderfully retro about a cherry lip.

Not necessarily a full, glamorous red lipstick — although I’m certainly not against that.

I’m talking about a sheer cherry stain with shine over the top.

It’s fresh enough for daytime but still gives the face some life.

Pair it with mascara, groomed brows and a little pink or red-toned blush and you’ve got one of those looks that appears much more deliberate than it actually was.

My favourite kind.

Peach Is the Easy Summer Option 🍑

If cherry feels a little too bold, peach is its beautifully easygoing cousin.

Peachy gloss works especially well with warm summer makeup: bronzer, golden eyes, coral blush and softly highlighted skin.

It’s also one of those shades that can look completely different depending on the lip liner underneath.

Which gives me an excellent excuse to experiment.

Obviously.

Watermelon Pink Is Just Fun 🍉

And sometimes that’s enough.

Not every beauty decision needs a twelve-point justification.

A bright-but-sheer watermelon pink lip is cheerful, flattering and exactly the sort of thing I want when the sun is shining.

Beauty is allowed to make us smile.

Actually, I’d argue that’s one of its best jobs.

My Summer Lip Formula

When I want the full juicy effect, I keep things ridiculously simple:

Step one: Prep with balm.

Step two: Add a little lip liner if I want more definition.

Step three: Apply my chosen sheer colour.

Step four: Add shine.

That’s it.

No complicated contouring.

No fourteen products.

No worrying whether everything is perfectly symmetrical.

Just healthy-looking, glossy lips.

The Products That Earn Their Place

This summer I’m being slightly more selective about what gets added to my beauty collection.

Before buying another lip product, I’m asking:

Is it different from what I already own?

Will I genuinely wear it?

Would I still want it if TikTok stopped talking about it tomorrow?

Because there’s a difference between enjoying beauty and accumulating products purely because somebody made them look pretty in a 20-second video.

I’m still going to buy things I love.

I’m just trying to make sure I actually use the good stuff.

More on that philosophy later this year…

The Juicy Lip Edit

So this summer, matte lips can have a little holiday.

I’m reaching for:

🍒 sheer cherry

🍑 glossy peach

🍉 watermelon pink

💗 soft rose

✨ and plenty of shine.

Whether it’s a £5 balm or the fanciest lip oil in my makeup bag, the rule is simple:

If I put it on and immediately feel a little brighter, it’s doing its job.

Next up in The Juicy Edit, we’re moving from lips to cheeks — because apparently I’ve also decided there’s no such thing as too much summer blush.

Love,
Hayls x
