The Men’s Autumn Style Edit: Style Doesn’t Stop at Jeans and a Jumper
The Men’s Autumn Style Edit: Style Doesn’t Stop at Jeans and a Jumper
Gentlemen, autumn has arrived.
And apparently this means I’m supposed to tell you to buy a nice jumper, some jeans and a sensible pair of boots.
Which is fine.
But we’re not stopping there.
Welcome to Day Nine of Shocktober: Bring Your Beauty Back to Life and the Men’s Autumn Style Edit.
Yesterday I told the ladies to have fun with their wardrobes.
Today?
Exactly the same advice applies to you.
Although if you want to dress like a giant cosy teddy bear, I’m certainly not complaining.
Men’s Fashion Is Allowed to Be Fun
Men’s fashion advice can sometimes feel incredibly restrictive.
Here’s the shirt.
Here’s the trouser.
Here’s the jacket.
Congratulations. You’re dressed.
But where’s the fun in that?
Your clothes can say something about you.
Maybe you’re classic.
Maybe you’re alternative.
Maybe you love streetwear.
Maybe you’re colourful.
Maybe you’re the guy who owns seventeen nearly identical black T-shirts and knows perfectly well that they’re all different.
I respect the commitment.
The point is that there isn’t one correct way to look like a stylish man.
Autumn Gives You Layers
And this is where autumn gets interesting.
Because layers are back.
Jackets over T-shirts.
Shirts over T-shirts.
Jumpers.
Hoodies.
Coats.
Scarves.
Boots.
Trainers.
Different textures and different weights.
Suddenly you’ve got more pieces to play with.
You can keep everything simple or use those layers to show some personality.
Yes, You Can Wear Colour
I’m putting this in its own section because apparently it still needs saying.
Men can wear colour.
You don’t have to spend October through February dressed exclusively in navy, grey, brown and black.
Unless you love navy, grey, brown and black.
In which case, carry on.
But if you see a bright jumper and love it?
Wear it.
Fancy a patterned shirt?
Wear it.
Want ridiculous socks underneath an otherwise completely sensible outfit?
Absolutely wear them.
Personal style gets considerably more interesting when you stop worrying about whether you’re doing it correctly.
The Cosy Teddy Bear Clause
Now we need to discuss something extremely important.
Autumn knitwear.
Specifically, really cosy autumn knitwear.
The chunky jumper.
The soft hoodie.
The oversized cardigan.
The sort of coat that makes a man look approximately 30% more huggable.
Gentlemen, I support this.
Entirely for fashion reasons, obviously.
If your autumn aesthetic happens to be giant cosy teddy bear, consider this your official endorsement from Hayls Beauty Tales.
Comfort can be stylish.
And frankly, autumn is exactly the season for it.
Or Go Completely the Other Way
Of course, you don’t have to be cosy.
Maybe autumn is when the leather jacket comes back out.
Maybe it’s boots and black denim.
Maybe it’s tailoring.
Maybe it’s vintage.
Maybe you’re somewhere between rock star and man-who-just-popped-out-for-milk.
That’s the fun of clothes.
They don’t have to tell the same story every day.
Wear Something That Feels Like You
The Women’s Autumn Edit had one rule.
The Men’s Autumn Edit gets the same one.
Wear the thing that makes you happy.
Don’t build a wardrobe for the imaginary man a fashion magazine thinks you should be.
Build one for yourself.
Your job.
Your lifestyle.
Your body.
Your budget.
Your personality.
And yes, your comfort.
Because style isn’t about turning yourself into somebody else.
It’s about finding clothes that make the person already standing there feel good.
And if that person happens to resemble an enormous cosy teddy bear?
Even better.
Love, Hayls x
