The Baby Autumn Style Edit: Comfort First, Ridiculous Cuteness a Very Close Second

Okay gals and guys, we’ve reached the tiniest members of the Autumn Style Edit.

And I have one important question.

Why are baby clothes so ridiculously cute?

Seriously.

Take an ordinary cardigan.

Shrink it.

Apparently I now want to squeal at it.

Welcome to Day Twelve of Shocktober: Bring Your Beauty Back to Life and the Baby Autumn Style Edit.

Our priorities are simple:

Comfort first.

Warmth second.

Ridiculous cuteness a very close third.

Babies Do Not Care About Trends

I feel fairly confident saying that your baby has absolutely no idea what Vogue has declared fashionable this autumn.

They’re not worried about whether burgundy is having a moment.

They haven’t asked whether their wardrobe fits the current aesthetic.

They have more pressing concerns.

Food.

Naps.

Cuddles.

And occasionally screaming because you handed them the exact thing they appeared to be asking for.

So baby fashion needs to work for the baby first.

Soft Is the Assignment

This is not the age for suffering for fashion.

Give me:

Soft sleepsuits.

Cosy cardigans.

Comfy leggings.

Warm little layers.

Cute hats when they’re actually needed.

And fabrics that feel lovely against delicate skin.

If something looks adorable but seems horribly uncomfortable, I’m siding with the baby.

Every time.

Autumn Layers, But Tiny

The same layering principle we’ve used throughout the Autumn Style Edit works brilliantly here too.

Autumn weather can’t make up its mind.

Layers let you adjust what your baby is wearing as temperatures change rather than trying to predict what the weather will be doing four hours from now.

Although with babies, there’s another advantage.

Sometimes a layer has to come off because…

Something happened.

Parents know.

We don’t need details.

The Tiny Teddy Bear Effect

Now we arrive at my favourite part of autumn baby fashion.

Fluffy things.

Little knitted cardigans.

Cosy coats.

Tiny hats.

Soft teddy textures.

If it’s comfortable, practical and makes them look approximately 87% more like a tiny teddy bear, we’re winning.

I don’t make the rules.

Actually, I just made that one.

But I’m keeping it.

Please Remember the Grown-Up Changing Them

There is one person whose opinion we haven’t considered yet.

The poor soul trying to perform a nappy change.

An outfit can be the cutest thing ever created by human hands, but if getting into it requires fourteen buttons, three bows, advanced engineering skills and the patience of a saint…

Maybe reconsider.

Cute is good.

Cute with poppers is better.

Let the Prints Be Silly

Dinosaurs.

Bears.

Bunnies.

Rainbows.

Stars.

Little woodland creatures.

Characters.

Fruit with inexplicable faces.

Baby clothes are allowed to be joyful.

There will be plenty of time for sophisticated wardrobes later.

Right now, if the sleepsuit has tiny dancing bears all over it?

Excellent.

No notes.

The Baby Autumn Edit

So I’m not going to give you a list of baby fashion trends you supposedly need to follow.

Instead, I’m voting for:

Soft.

Warm.

Practical.

Easy to change.

Easy to move in.

And completely, unnecessarily adorable.

Because babies don’t need to be fashionable.

They need to be comfortable enough to sleep, wriggle, explore and generally run the household despite being the smallest person in it.

And if they happen to look like a tiny teddy bear while doing so?

Even better.

Love, Hayls x
